Introduction to Computer Systems

This is an introductory course for the freshmen of our Department. It serves as a starting point for "Algorithms I", "Programming Languages", "Logic Design" and "Computer Architecture".

The main topics covered during the lectures are :

  • Information Representation in the Binary System
  • Operations in the Binary System
  • Basic Components of A Computer System
  • How is an Instruction Executed ?
  • The Computer as a Multilevel System - Translators - Interpreters
  • Memory Addressing Modes
  • Assembly Language (Intel's 80X86 was targetted)
  • Computer Peripherals - Buses - Protocols
  • Computer Communication & Networks - Errors - Error Detection and Correction Principles


Dr. Vergos does not currently teach this course. Some of links below are therefore broken.
